How to post a flooring installation job
Flooring quotes vary because the visible finish is only part of the work. Existing coverings, subfloor condition, moisture, levels, doors, skirting and room contents can add significant preparation. A detailed post helps installers compare the same scope.
Use approximate measurements for initial replies, but expect the chosen installer or supplier to confirm quantities and site conditions before final ordering.
List rooms and approximate areas
- Name each room, hallway, stairs and landing included.
- Give length and width or total approximate area.
- State the chosen flooring type and product details if purchased.
- Mention continuous runs through doorways or pattern direction preferences.
- Photograph thresholds, fireplaces, curved walls and awkward edges.
Describe the existing floor
Say what covering is currently fitted and whether removal is required. Describe the known base as concrete, timber boards, sheet material or unknown. Mention movement, squeaks, cracks, uneven areas, previous leaks and signs of moisture. Do not promise that a subfloor is ready when it has not been inspected.
Clarify finishing details
- Skirting removal and refitting, new skirting or edge trim.
- Door trimming and transitions between different floor heights.
- Underlay, moisture barrier, adhesive or floor preparation.
- Movement joints and thresholds.
- Waste removal and disposal of old covering.
Explain furniture and access
State whether rooms will be empty and who moves appliances or heavy furniture. Mention apartment floors, lifts, parking and material storage. If the property is occupied, explain whether work can be phased room by room and where furniture can be moved.
Compare the complete installed finish
When reviewing replies, compare preparation, underlay or adhesive, trims, door adjustments, waste removal and furniture handling alongside the fitting rate. Confirm who supplies each material and what happens if the installer finds moisture or an uneven subfloor. A lower fitting figure may not represent the lower completed-project cost.

Example: 'Install supplied 12 mm laminate in a living room, hall and two bedrooms, approximately 58 square metres total, in a Wexford bungalow. Remove existing carpet and underlay.
