How to unblock a kitchen sink without damaging the pipes
Most slow kitchen sinks are restricted by grease, food debris or soap close to the plughole or trap. The safest approach is progressive: remove visible debris, plunge correctly, clean an accessible trap and stop if the blockage appears to be farther along the drain.
Avoid mixing drain cleaners or repeatedly pouring harsh chemicals into standing water. They can remain in the trap, damage some fittings and expose whoever opens the pipe later. Tell a professional about any product already used.
Confirm whether the problem is local
- Run water briefly in another sink and check whether it drains normally.
- Listen for gurgling from nearby sinks, showers or floor drains.
- Check whether a dishwasher discharge makes water rise in the sink.
- Look outside for an overflowing gully, foul smell or backed-up inspection chamber.
If several fixtures are slow, a toilet level changes, or an outside drain is backing up, skip the sink dismantling. The restriction may be in a shared branch, soil pipe or external drain and needs appropriate equipment.
Clear the plughole and use a plunger

If plunging fails and the trap is accessible, clear the cupboard, place a wide basin beneath it and take a photo first. Wear gloves and eye protection. Loosen plastic slip nuts by hand where possible, support the trap and lower it carefully. Empty it, remove the blockage and clean the sealing washers without stretching them.
Reassemble the trap exactly as photographed, with tapered washers facing the correct direction. Hand-tighten, run a small volume of water and inspect every joint with dry tissue. Tighten only enough to stop seepage; crushing a washer can create a new leak.
Do not create a more difficult blockage
- Never combine bleach, acid, caustic cleaner, descaler or any other chemical product.
- Do not push an improvised metal rod into concealed plastic pipework.
- Do not dismantle glued joints, waste-disposal units or inaccessible pipework.
- Do not keep running a dishwasher into a sink that is already backing up.
