How to describe a painting job for accurate quotes
Painting quotes are only comparable when the scope is comparable. One painter may price walls only, while another includes ceilings, woodwork, repairs and premium paint. A detailed job post helps each professional quote the same work and makes it easier for you to understand why prices differ.
You do not need to calculate every square metre. Room counts, approximate dimensions, photographs and a clear list of surfaces usually create a strong starting point.
List every room and surface
- Walls and ceilings, including approximate room dimensions.
- Doors, frames, skirting boards, window boards and radiators.
- Kitchen units, fitted wardrobes or other specialist surfaces.
- Exterior walls, render, soffits, fascia, gates or timber windows.
- Feature walls, multiple colours or areas that should not be painted.
Count doors and windows where woodwork is included. For halls, stairs and landings, mention ceiling height and whether the stairwell is open or difficult to access.
Show the preparation needed
Photograph cracks, peeling paint, water stains, fresh plaster, old wallpaper and damaged woodwork. Say whether rooms are furnished and whether you expect the painter to move and protect furniture. Do not describe active damp as a paint problem; identify and resolve the moisture source before decorating over it.
Clarify paint and finish
- State whether you have chosen colours or need advice and samples.
- Say whether the quote should include all paint and consumables.
- Mention washable, low-sheen, mould-resistant or exterior finishes where relevant.
- Ask for the paint brand, product line and expected number of coats to be written into the quote.
Plan access and sequencing
Explain whether the property will be occupied, empty or furnished during the work. Include your target completion date and any fixed events, but allow for drying, preparation and weather. For exterior work, mention scaffolding access, adjoining properties, conservatories and parking.
