How much does a pergola cost in Ireland?

An open timber pergola gives climbing plants and partial shade, but little protection from Irish rain. A louvred aluminium roof can open for light and close for shelter; ask how rain is channelled through the gutters and posts and how the system behaves in wind. A fixed glass or polycarbonate roof gives more predictable rain cover, though the material, noise in rain and daylight below it will differ.

Side screens, sliding glazing and outdoor heating turn a simple pergola into a more complex project. Ask whether accessories can be retrofitted and whether the roof and sides are intended for seasonal outdoor use or an enclosed room. The words 'all weather' do not mean an uninsulated structure will be warm in January.

The two published starting prices above are useful only when their scopes are kept separate: one supplier describes professional installation, the other recommends third-party fitters. Even an installed starting price may not cover your particular footings, old patio removal, concrete pads, long-distance delivery, power supply or screens. Request a site-specific, VAT-inclusive total before comparing offers.[1][2]

• State the width, projection and clear height needed for doors to open; ask for the actual roofed area in square metres.
• Ask whether the structure is freestanding or attached to the house, and who checks the wall and fixing substrate.
• Identify who designs and pays for footings, anchors, drainage and making good disturbed paving.
• Separate optional screens, lighting, motors and electrical work from the base structure price.
• Get the proposed material and finish, wind-loading basis, roof warranty and installation warranty in writing.

Do not assume every pergola is exempt. Its roof, enclosure, attachment to the house, position and size can change how the local authority treats it. The domestic outbuilding and awning exemption described by Waterford City & County Council has conditions, including a combined 30 m² area cap for qualifying structures, at least 30 m² of remaining private open space, height limits and no placement forward of the front wall. The 30 m² figure is not a blanket permission for any pergola: the proposed works must fall within the relevant class and satisfy all its conditions.[3]

The exemption rules changed on 27 July 2026, so an older supplier blog quoting 25 m² may be out of date. If the site is a protected structure or in an Architectural Conservation Area, or if the proposed structure sits near a boundary, seek advice before paying a deposit. A Section 5 declaration is the formal way to ask the local planning authority whether your specific proposal is exempt.[3][4]

Give your county and approximate dimensions, a photo of the patio and house wall, and say whether you want shade or genuine rain cover. Note the ground surface, access width, any visible drain or service covers, and whether you want side screens or power now or later. Ask each installer to mark what is excluded rather than guessing that the base is included.

Example: 'We want a roughly 3 m by 4 m roofed pergola over our rear patio in County Kildare. We prefer manual louvres and may add one wind screen later. The patio is existing paving beside the kitchen wall. Please quote a VAT-inclusive installed price, state the foundation and drainage work included, give the roof and frame specifications, and identify any planning or structural information we must obtain before work starts.'
