Burst pipe repair cost in Ireland: call-outs, repairs and damage

Uisce Eireann advises turning off the internal stop valve for a burst pipe and draining the cold-water system. It also advises switching off central heating and the immersion before draining hot water, and making sure the hot-water system is refilled before switching either back on. If water is near sockets, switches or appliances, switch off the mains only if it is safe; do not touch a wet switch, and call a qualified electrician. Follow its full guidance for your system rather than improvising around electrical hazards.[3]

If several neighbours also have no water, Uisce Eireann says there may be a public supply issue; check its service updates or contact it before paying for an internal pipe search. In an apartment, contact the management company as well if the leak may involve shared supply or another unit. Photograph damage once it is safe, and check the emergency-assistance and claims instructions in your own insurance policy; cover and excess vary.[3][4]

LeakSOS's advertised Dublin fees include the first hour and exclude VAT and any materials. Its evening and weekend schedule is more expensive than its daytime rate. Dublin Plumber 24Hrs uses a different model: a diagnostic charge waived if you approve its fixed-price work. Neither price tells you the cost of cutting into a wall, replacing a concealed pipe, drying a room, repairing plaster or replacing damaged finishes.[1][2]

• Immediate isolation: stop the water, make the area safe and establish whether the leak is inside the home.
• Diagnosis and access: expose the damaged section; concealed pipework can require opening a wall, floor or ceiling.
• Permanent pipe repair: replace the defective length or fitting, then pressure-check or otherwise test it before closing up.
• Consequential work: drying, electrics, plastering, flooring or decoration may need separate trades and quotes.
• Emergency timing: a Sunday night visit can cost more than a planned weekday repair, and the first visit may only isolate the leak.

Ask whether VAT, materials, a return visit, leak detection and making good are included. If the plumber can only make a temporary safe repair, get the permanent-work scope and expected timing in writing. Do not take a low call-out as a promise of a low final invoice.

No flow from a tap does not prove a pipe has burst. Uisce Eireann suggests checking whether neighbours are also affected and whether only some taps have stopped. A frozen pipe can crack and start leaking later as it warms. Do not use a blowtorch or turn on heating or immersion to thaw a suspected frozen pipe; its guidance specifically warns against those methods. If unsure, call a competent plumber instead of opening a wall or using heat near hidden services.[3][4]

After a confirmed leak, ask the plumber what failed and what will prevent recurrence: insulation of exposed pipework, repairing a draught path, replacing a vulnerable fitting or dealing with an unheated attic. A patch without addressing the cause may fail again during another cold spell. Any electrical repair or structural opening should be scoped by the appropriate trade.

If the water cannot be isolated or electrical fittings are wet, use direct emergency help first; an online request is not a substitute for immediate response. Once contained, say whether the stop valve is off, the rough leak location, building type, number of affected rooms, any ceiling or floor damage and whether access is needed behind finished surfaces. Give a safe photo of the leak and surrounding area, not a close-up obtained by touching electrics or climbing into a hazardous attic.

Example: 'A pipe appears to have split in our unheated utility room in County Laois after last night's frost. We have turned off the internal stop valve; no water is near sockets. The split looks accessible above floor level, but there is water on the laminate. Please quote your call-out, first-hour coverage, VAT, materials and a permanent repair. We also need to know if you can assess insulation of the exposed pipe. Photos are attached and someone can provide access today.'

For non-emergency follow-up work, obtain a written quote before opening or reinstatement. CCPC recommends checking a contractor and keeping the agreed scope and payment terms in writing. Keep invoices and photographs if you intend to discuss damage with your insurer.[5]
