Radiator replacement cost in Ireland: what to budget and ask

A radiator that does not heat evenly may need an air, valve, flow or system-balance check rather than immediate replacement. A leak might come from a valve or compression joint rather than the radiator body. Rust at the panel, a persistent pinhole leak or an undersized radiator may make replacement the better option. Ask a plumber to diagnose the fault and state the reason for replacement before ordering a new unit.

• Like-for-like swap: similar output and dimensions, compatible connections, same wall position.
• Valve work: repair or replace a leaking lockshield or thermostatic radiator valve; the radiator itself may stay.
• Relocation: move the radiator and alter pipe routes or wall supports, often with flooring or decorating work.
• Heating upgrade: change radiator output as part of a broader boiler, heat-pump or room-insulation project.

Do not buy a radiator based only on width and height. Connection centres, wall brackets, heat output and the design temperature all matter. If you already bought one, give the exact model and dimensions to the plumber before asking for a fitting price.

The €150-€300 September 2026 benchmark is explicitly a per-radiator labour guide, with a new radiator extra. The older €180-€525 marketplace figure is a broader installation/replacement quote range stated excluding VAT. Do not add the two ranges together or treat either as a fixed supply-and-fit price. Ask each plumber for one written total and a breakdown of radiator, valves, labour, call-out and VAT.[1][2]

• Radiator supply: size, panel type, finish and brand change the material price.
• Valves and fittings: thermostatic and lockshield valves may be reused or replaced, depending on condition and compatibility.
• System work: draining, refilling, bleeding, inhibitor and balancing may be included or itemised separately.
• Making good: pipe holes, wall fixings, lifted floorboards and decoration are often outside the plumbing scope.
• Access and timing: awkward pipework or urgent out-of-hours work can change the labour cost.

For several radiators, ask for a whole-job price rather than multiplying a single-radiator minimum by the number of rooms. The contractor may drain the system once and work efficiently across rooms, but the final price still depends on how many connections and valves need alteration.

If you are changing from a boiler to a heat pump, a same-size swap may be a false economy. SEAI says the installer should calculate room-by-room heat demand and check whether existing radiators can deliver enough warmth at the planned operating temperature. Some radiators may need replacing or enlarging, while others may be fine. The correct design is specific to the home, insulation and system settings.[3]

Do not assume a standalone radiator replacement receives an energy grant. SEAI describes support for radiator or underfloor changes when they are necessary as part of an eligible heat-pump upgrade; check the current scheme conditions before including any grant in your budget. Ask the heat-pump designer to coordinate the radiator specification with the plumber, rather than pricing isolated units first.[3]

Give each plumber the same information: property and county, heating type, approximate radiator dimensions, visible pipe connections, the fault or reason for changing it, and whether you want valves replaced. Photograph the radiator, both valves and the pipes without removing covers or disturbing the system. For a new position, include a room photo showing the proposed location and floor type.

• Is the price supply-and-fit or fitting only? Which radiator model and heat output are included?
• Will existing valves be reused, tested or replaced? Are both valves and new tails included?
• Does the price cover draining or isolating, refilling, inhibitor, bleeding and leak testing?
• Will pipework be moved, and who repairs the floor or wall afterwards?
• Is balancing or a return visit included if other radiators become uneven after the work?
• What is the VAT treatment, earliest visit and written workmanship warranty?

The CCPC recommends agreeing a written description of the work, price, timing and payment arrangements for home-improvement jobs. Keep the quote and invoice, especially where the job forms part of a larger heating-system upgrade.[4]

'I need one leaking panel radiator assessed and likely replaced in a three-bedroom house in County Clare. It is about 100 cm wide and 60 cm high, on an outside wall in the living room. If your purpose is to improve a cold room rather than fix a leak, say so. The plumber may need to check output, flow and room heat loss instead of simply installing another radiator with the same dimensions.
