Gas boiler repair cost in Ireland: what will you actually pay?

If you smell gas, do not troubleshoot the boiler, use electrical switches or post an ordinary repair request first. Gas Networks Ireland says to open doors and windows, avoid flames and electrical switching, and call its 24-hour emergency number 1800 20 50 50 from outside the affected area. If you cannot get through, call 999 or 112. A carbon-monoxide alarm or suspected fumes likewise requires immediate safety action, not a routine quote comparison.[3]

For an ordinary loss of heating with no gas smell or alarm, note whether hot water still works, whether there is an error code, and whether other homes have power or gas. You can check visible user controls and the manufacturer's user instructions, but do not remove the casing, interfere with gas fittings or repeatedly reset a boiler that keeps locking out. If water is leaking, describe where it is visible without touching electrical parts.

Bord Gais Energy's €259 offer bundles a repair visit and service, but its own page warns that extra parts or labour may be charged. Its €319 repair-and-care option is a different contract with eligibility conditions and future cover, not a comparable one-off repair. Read the terms before choosing a plan when the boiler is already faulty.[1]

Dublin Plumber 24Hrs lists €95 for inspection and diagnosis, waived if the customer approves its quoted work. It lists €125 for a weekday boiler technician, with VAT included and materials excluded. The company says its call-out includes the first hour of investigation. Treat these as that firm's Dublin pricing structure, not as a formula that tells you the final cost of a pump, circuit board or heat exchanger replacement.[2]

• Ask if the diagnostic fee is payable even when no repair is possible, and whether it is credited against the repair.
• Ask for a price for the diagnosed fault before parts are ordered: part, labour, VAT, return visit and testing.
• Ask whether the service is included or separate; a service does not itself fix a defective component.
• If the part is unavailable, ask how long sourcing takes and whether the boiler can safely remain off until then.
• For evening or weekend work, confirm the out-of-hours rate and what the first visit can realistically achieve.

Gas appliance repair is gas work. Check that the person doing it is a Registered Gas Installer with the appropriate work category. The RGI scheme says a completion certificate is required for gas work; its Certificate 3 covers repair and servicing of an existing installation. Ask for the relevant certificate or documentation and keep it with the invoice and fault report. A plumber who can fix a radiator is not automatically authorised to repair a gas boiler.[4]

If your boiler is oil-fired rather than gas-fired, say so in the request and seek someone competent in oil-boiler work. Do not assume a gas-only repair offer or RGI registration covers an oil appliance. A relatively new boiler with an available part may justify repair, especially if the work is warranted. For an older boiler with repeated faults, ask the RGI for a written repair quote and a separate replacement option. Compare the installed replacement scope, controls, flue and pipework changes, warranty and disposal; do not compare a repair-only price against the price of a boxed boiler. There is no universal age or percentage rule that makes replacement automatically best.

Before accepting an expensive repair, check whether an existing manufacturer warranty, maintenance contract or home-emergency policy applies. Confirm any excess, approved-contractor restriction and parts limit with the provider. Do not assume a normal boiler service or a new boiler grant will pay for a breakdown repair.

Give the county and Eircode area, boiler make and model, approximate age, fuel, fault code, when the fault began, whether heating and hot water both fail, and whether there is visible water leakage. Photograph the boiler front and display only; do not remove panels. Tell the professional about any previous visits and whether the boiler is under warranty.

Example: 'Our gas boiler in County Meath stopped heating the radiators last night, but the hot water still works. The front display shows error code [code]; the boiler is [brand/model] and around eight years old. No gas smell or alarm. Please tell us your diagnostic call-out charge, earliest visit, RGI registration, whether the fee is credited against repair, and whether parts and a return visit are extra. We would like a written repair price before work starts.'

If a contractor proposes a new boiler immediately, ask what failed, why it cannot reasonably be repaired, and for an itemised replacement quote. For non-emergencies, the CCPC recommends written quotes and checking the contractor before committing to home work.[5]
