Smart thermostat and heating controls installation cost in Ireland

A basic installation may replace an existing thermostat and add a receiver or hub. A more involved job can add separate time and temperature control for upstairs and downstairs, a hot-water schedule, new zone valves or a wiring-centre change. The cost depends on the controls already present and whether they can work with the new device. A box labelled 'smart thermostat' does not create extra heating zones by itself.

• Single-zone upgrade: one controlled heating area, perhaps with hot-water control if the system and chosen kit support it.
• Two-zone upgrade: independent control of separate heating areas; check whether the existing pipework and valves already provide those zones.
• Whole-system controls project: thermostat, programmer, hot-water cylinder control and any necessary valves or wiring are surveyed together.

Tell the installer whether the home uses a gas or oil boiler, an electric heating system or a heat pump. Note the make and model of your current boiler and programmer, how many thermostats are on the walls, and whether hot water has its own timer. Ask for a compatibility check before buying a device online. Some kits also depend on a reliable home internet connection for remote features, though the exact offline behaviour is product-specific.

The Dublin installer's €160 installation-only offer assumes you provide a suitable device; the €440 single-kit and €750 twin-kit offers include specified products and fitting. Those figures should not be mixed into a single 'typical cost' range, because the scope is different. Check the live offer, service area, VAT and exclusions when asking for a quote. A larger zoning or rewiring job needs its own survey and price.[1]

• Product: exact brand, model, number of thermostats, receivers and any hub or subscription requirement.
• Electrical and heating work: new cable runs, zone valves, wiring-centre changes or boiler interface work.
• Setup: pairing, Wi-Fi connection, schedules, hot-water testing and a demonstration of manual override.
• Commercial terms: VAT, call-out, travel, disposal of old controls, warranty and who will return if a zone does not respond.

A low advertised fitting price is useful only when your existing system is compatible. Ask the contractor to state what would trigger a variation and whether they will contact you for approval before doing extra work. Do not rely on an assumed percentage saving on heating bills: usage, insulation, tariffs and how well the previous controls were set all affect the outcome.

SEAI currently lists a €700 grant for an eligible heating-controls installation. The home must have an MPRN and have been built and occupied before 2011; the grant is unavailable if the applicant is applying for or has previously claimed a heat-pump system grant. A standalone smart thermostat purchase should never be assumed to qualify. Confirm the proposed whole-system scope meets SEAI's current requirements with an SEAI-registered contractor before budgeting for any grant.[2]

If you apply yourself, SEAI requires grant approval before work begins, an eligible registered contractor and a post-works BER assessment before payment. The current grant page also describes a separate €50 BER grant. Get written confirmation of eligibility and include the BER and any extra controls work in your project budget; the advertised grant is not an instant discount on a retail thermostat.[2]

• Will this kit control my existing boiler and hot water, and what happens during an internet outage?
• How many independent zones will I actually have after installation? Which rooms will each thermostat sense?
• Are extra valves, a cylinder thermostat, a programmer change or wiring work required?
• Who performs and certifies any regulated electrical or gas work involved in the scope?
• Will you test each heating and hot-water call, explain the manual controls and leave the instructions with me?
• Is this a grant-compliant controls upgrade or just a device installation? If grant-compliant, what is the exact scope and contractor registration?
• What is the complete price including VAT, commissioning and any post-works visit?

Do not open boiler or mains-wiring covers to identify connections yourself. Photos of the front of the boiler, programmer, thermostats, hot-water cylinder and any labelled zone controls are enough for an initial enquiry; let the installer inspect the wiring safely.

Give the county, home type, heating fuel, boiler model, present controls and the result you want. Say whether you already own the thermostat, whether independent hot-water control matters and whether you want the installer to assess grant eligibility. Invite a survey if you are unsure how many zones exist. That is more useful than posting 'fit Hive' without a system description.

Example: 'We have a three-bed semi in County Kildare with an oil boiler, one hall thermostat and a separate hot-water timer. We want app-based heating control before winter and would like to know whether upstairs and downstairs can be controlled separately. Please quote supply and installation of a compatible system, any valves or wiring required, setup, testing and VAT. If a full SEAI-compliant controls upgrade is appropriate, please list its scope and grant process separately. Photos of the existing controls are attached.'

Compare the written scope first and price second. A quote for one new thermostat should not be judged against a quote to rework a house's heating zones as though they are interchangeable products.
