Outdoor tap installation in Ireland: planning the job before you book

Carrying water through the house to wash a patio or water plants is inconvenient. An outdoor tap can be a useful small improvement, but its position and supply route matter more than the price of the visible tap. A short connection near accessible plumbing is not the same job as a feed across the garden.
For an Irish home, winter protection deserves attention from the outset. Uisce Eireann advises insulating exposed pipes, fixing dripping taps and knowing how to isolate the water supply. Ask the installer how your particular tap and pipe route should be protected rather than relying on a cover as the entire winter plan.[1]
Choose the position around how you will use it
Explain the intended use: occasional watering, connecting a hose or supplying equipment. Show the plumber where you want the outlet and what is on the other side of the wall. Do not assume the nearest visible indoor pipe is an appropriate connection point; the installer needs to identify the supply and assess the arrangement.
Think about walking routes, storage and where water will go during use. A tap behind a locked side gate may be convenient for the garden but awkward for washing the car. A hose crossing a shared entrance can create a nuisance. For an apartment or managed property, confirm permission before altering an exterior wall or shared services.
If the outlet needs to be away from the house, describe it as a separate garden supply project. Include the approximate distance, paving or planting along the route and any shared boundary. Ask the contractor to assess underground services and reinstatement; this is not simply a standard wall-tap fitting.
Why an outdoor tap price needs a scope
Obtain a written price for the complete installation rather than multiplying a tap's retail price by an assumed hourly rate. This guide does not claim an Irish national average: the accessible pipework, wall, supply route and installation specification are not known until your job is described or surveyed.
- Tap model and any fittings or mounting materials supplied.
- Connection and pipe route, including access to the existing supply.
- Accessible isolation and the proposed winter-protection arrangement.
- Assessment of suitable protection against water flowing back from connected equipment.
- Penetration sealing, internal and external making good, and testing.
- Call-out, VAT where applicable, waste disposal and any additional attendance.
Ask the plumber which assumptions make a fixed price valid and how a change will be agreed if access proves different. If one quote excludes opening a cupboard or replacing damaged existing pipework, it is not directly comparable with a price that includes those tasks.
New tap, replacement tap or leak repair?
Say whether there is already an outdoor outlet. For a replacement, photograph the existing tap and accessible indoor connection, and describe any dripping or difficulty turning it off. Request inspection of the connection rather than assuming a new tap body will solve every leak.
For a first installation, explain whether cupboards, appliances or a finished wall obstruct access. Do not move a heavy appliance or open a wall just to obtain an enquiry photograph. The plumber can decide whether a survey or preparatory work is necessary.
Tell the installer what equipment you intend to connect, especially if it will remain attached. Ask what safeguards and operating instructions the proposed arrangement needs. This is a specification for a professional to assess, not a recommendation to connect garden equipment directly to any convenient pipe.
Plan for frost before the first cold spell
Uisce Eireann warns that unprotected pipes and dripping taps can freeze and crack, with leaks appearing as they thaw. Its winterproofing guidance also says leaving taps running does not prevent freezing. Use that official advice as a reason to request a clear protection plan, not to improvise a plumbing alteration.[1][2]
Ask the plumber to show you the isolation point and explain the shutdown or drain-down procedure for the installed product, including what to do with the hose. Keep those instructions with the invoice. A product described as frost-resistant still needs to be installed and used according to its own requirements.
If you are replacing an outlet because it froze, mention that history. Repeating the same exposed arrangement may leave the original problem unresolved. Where there is an active leak, book a repair rather than treating it as a routine installation to be scheduled whenever convenient.
What to check at handover
Ask the installer to demonstrate normal operation, isolation and the applicable winter procedure. Check that the quoted making good has been completed and request an explanation of any visible pipework or controls. Note who to contact if a leak becomes apparent after the first use.
Keep the tap model and written scope with the invoice. If your plans later change from occasional hose use to a permanent irrigation system, ask whether the existing installation is suitable for that new use. Approval for one purpose is not automatically approval for every garden connection.
Post an outdoor tap installation request
Illustrative brief: 'Install a garden tap on the rear wall for occasional hose use. Photographs show the outside position and the room behind it. Please assess the supply route and quote for the complete installation, appropriate isolation, winter protection, testing and making good. Confirm any survey charge and exclusions.' Add your county and access information privately in the request.

Frequently asked questions
Can an outdoor tap be installed anywhere in the garden?+
The route, supply, intended use and site access need assessment. An outlet away from the house may involve underground work and reinstatement, so describe it separately from a wall-mounted tap.
Should I leave an outside tap running during frost?+
No. Uisce Eireann says running taps does not prevent pipes freezing. Ask your installer for the winter procedure appropriate to the tap and supply route.[1]
Does buying the tap include installation?+
Not unless the seller explicitly offers an installation package. Confirm the complete plumber's price, materials, access work, testing and exclusions before booking.
